Point of Rocks, A Hidden Jewel on Siesta Key

Hidden along the southern end of Siesta Key beach where white sand meets the sea wall is one of the best water sporting areas on the entire west coast of Florida.  It is called Point of Rocks and is aptly named because it is at this location that beautiful rock formations meet the shore line creating a fishing, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and exploration heaven.   Point of Rocks is the only formation of beach rock on the west coast of Florida, is has been formed by quartz sand, limestone, and molluscan grindstone over the last 4300 years.  The rock formation juts into the Gulf of Mexico along the Siesta Key shoreline for approximately ½ mile.

The fishing at Point of Rocks is best early in the morning or around sunset.  The fishing here is great for people of all ages, and fishers enjoy standing on the rocks, casting their lines into the turquoise waters where fish such as Snook, and Sheepshead are likely to take the bait.

Snorkeling and diving is a very popular along the Point of Rocks formation at High Tide. The turquoise, warm calm waters make this a wonderful place to explore life under the sea along the Siesta Key coast.  Point of Rocks is the perfect spot for beginners and those snorkeling will find colorful corals, bright green flowing sea grass, a large variety of fish, and interesting shell fish, shells, and other marine life.

For those who like to explore without getting wet in the process, much of the Point of Rocks formation is above water during the low tide, making this a great spot to examine the micro sea life left behind by the tidal waters once they recede.   The Point of Rocks Shore line just south of sea wall is rich with beautiful shells in pristine condition.  There are private homes along this stretch of beach, so be respectful and stay clear of the homeowner property.

To reach Point of Rocks, park at Siesta Key Beach access 12, walk about ¼ of a mile south along the beach shore until you come to the Sea wall.  Carefully navigate around the corner of the wall, step down the three steps into the water and onto the shelly rocky shore, and you will find to your delight, you have arrived.  Be safe and have fun!
